Open Question: If dumping the exhaust after rear axle, do you need side exits?

Hello, in my car I wish to dump the exhaust right after the rear axle. Here are my questions... -Will it be louder than my current setup (straight pipes, single in dual out, no cats, no muffler) -If I dump the exhaust after the rear axle is it ok to just cut the rest of the pipe after it off, or do I need some side exits?  more

Open Question: Exhaust dumping after rear axle?

Hello, I own a car and not a truck. It's a Camaro. Right now the sound is nice and loud with straight pipes coming out with no cat and no muffler. It's single in and dual out. -My question is that will it sound louder if I dump the exhaust right after the rear axle? -Also when I say dump I mean just cutting off the rest of the exhaust after the rear axle, not having side exits. Will this be louder/safe?  more

Open Question: Will the car sound louder if I dump the exhaust towards front of the car, help?

Hello, it is not a truck but a Camaro. Right now the setup is headers, straight pipe, single in and dual out, just exhaust piping, no muffler, no cat. it sounds good, but if I go to an exhaust shop and have him cut out a portion of exhaust towards the portion closer to the engine, would it sound louder or quieter than now? -also where would the exhaust escape if there was no pipe leading out away from the car?  more

Open Question: Please help me - question about dumping exhaust?

Hello, I own a 1999 Camaro. Right now I have headers, then a single straight pipe going out to dual outlets. It's a single in dual out. There is no muffler and not cat. -I like the tone but would dumping the exhaust at a certain point achieve a louder sound. -I dont think open headers are good for the car, but if I cut a piece of exhaust out of the top (like closer to the headers) would it be louder or quieter than it is now??? -also what about keeping carbon monoxide out?  more

Open Question: Will my exhaust sound louder as the pipes get hotter/older?

Hello, on my car I have just exhaust piping like 2.5' from the exhaust headers straight pipes back. Resolved Question: 99 Mustang v6 exhaust?

Looking for a loud deep aggressive sound. Want to buy a catback and turn into a dual exhaust. Which would be better? SLP Loudmouth 1's or Magnaflow Magnapack? Also, should I just get H-pipe adapter or invest in a Pypes catted-X? Daily driver street legal. Eventually will put headers in probably. Any thoughts or advice is much appreciated!! Thanks!  more

Voting Question: Question about wanting holes in car exhaust?

I know it sounds strange, but please bare with me. I am going to junk the car and am just experimenting. I heard some holes in the exhaust system could give it a more aggressive tone. This is what I have. It's a single in, and then dual out. There is no muffler. Where can I make some holes to give it an aggressive tone? I know not to close to where the cat is, but perhaps maybe somewhere where the duals come out? -also if I dont have a drill, what else can I use to make holes? -appreciated. there is already no cat and no muffler. what about the piping?  more

Voting Question: How to identify the brand of exhaust system on a truck?

I just bought a used 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Regular Cab pickup on the 12th of this month. And it has aftermarket dual cat-back exhaust installed on it. The dealer didn't even know the brand of exhaust either. And I was wondering if there's any way I can identify what kind of exhaust it is by a stamping on the muffler or something? I looked under the truck already, and the muffler does not have any brand name like Magnaflow stamped on it at all. Thank you. 10 points to best answer!  more

Hello, I own a 1999 Chevrolet Camaro, the V6 one. I took the cat and muffler off and have one single straight pipe running out. Voting Question: i have dual cat converters they may be causing a problem.?

i have dual exhaust thus 2 cats, 1 of them has a nasty rattle in it and i believe its the cause of a shudder when i accelerate sometimes. is it illegal to remove 1 if i have 2 if not, is there a way to bypass it, or hollow it out so it looks like i have it still? i'm sorry, i forgot, its a 97 f150, it does have o2 censors and the check engine light is on. i've never gone to get it checked though. and i'm saying the cause is probly from normal wear, the whole exhaust looks pretty beat up. along with the shuddering, theres a slight rattle when the truck is accelerating coming from the cat.  more

Resolved Question: 97 ford expedition // different exhaust setups.?

I have a 97 5.4L. I want it to be loud and not ruin the motor. I just traded my 89 f150 with headers straight pipe glasspacks for this vehicle. I am a mechanic and I am conserned if I run true dual cats and straight pipes that would not be enough back pressure for the exhaust valves. I usually cut the cats off but this is a newer vehicle. If my setup is true dual straights with cats, would that provide enough back pressure?  more

Voting Question: Exhaust Tip Size and Clearance?

Hey guys, So here is my problem, due to my own stupidity i ordered these tips for my ford fusion I4 http://vibrantperformance.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=1021_1034_1059&products_id=101 Now what the problem or possible problem is, I am having a custom exhaust made for my car, and it will be running 2.5OD piping from the cats back, now they are a very very good exhaust place in town, i've seen and heard there work, but anyways and he said get a tip that will fit over 2.5 OD pipe, so i did, i was looking for a 1-2 tip because my 4 cylinder car it had 2 exhaust tips coming out, now i they were pretty small, probably about 1.5 inch or maybe 2 inch , the tip i bought has dual 3.5 in tips with about .25 inch gap in between them, the cutout in the bumper is 7.5inch and that is exactly what the tip size is maybe a tad smaller, well there be enough clearance to prevent warping and such? thanks in advance for your help.  more

Resolved Question: Mustang turndown on exhaust?

I am building my dual exhaust for my 2000 V6 Mustang. I am going with 2.5 inch straight pipes from the cats (no crossover) going into 2 Thrush Welded Mufflers. But I don't know about whether to do tailpipes or turn downs. Which is better, have tailpipes coming from your mufflers or having turndown pipes coming right off of the muffler? Which would be louder on a mustang? Do not mention a V8 in your answer. I don't care what your preference of you car engine is. Yes I have a V6 and that is fine with me and plenty fast for me. I am not looking for the fastest car otherwise I would have gotten a GT. I am just looking to upgrade my exhaust cause anything is better then the stock single one that came with the damn car. You mention how V8 is better then a V6 I will report you. I don't need an h pipe or x pipe on my car either cause V6 is an even firing engine. H pipe may give you a deeper tone some say but it there is no need for one on a V6  more

Resolved Question: exhaust on my 05 z71?

My 2005 Silverado Z71 has a dual cat-back system on it. Idk who the exahust is made by, but its not very loud at all. My muffler has large cracks in it that I can put my finger through the muffler. If I just replace the muffler with a louder one, would this be the same as upgrading the whole exhaust? I would like to go straight pipe but some are saying it will be too loud, but thats what I want. Not illegal loud though. I have huge mud tires on it, so its going to loud in the cab no matter what. What should I do? thanks  more

Resolved Question: True duals vs. Cat Back Exhaust?

I drive a 2005 Silverado Z71 with the 5.3 V8. Right now it has cat back exhaust with dual pipes exiting both sides right after the rear tires. Resolved Question: How to do dual exhaust on a single O2 sensor system?

I have a 1990 Chevrolet Caprice 5.0 liter and I just put true duals on it. Now the driver side exhaust manifold has the O2 sensor and the passenger side has nothing but the smog pump lines going to the manifold like the driver side does as well. The new pipes run through the front pass. side of the car and y off just behind the transmission with dual catalytic converters mounted side by side tack welded together just behind the pass. side firewall. The cat. on the left has the air line coming off of it going to the smog emission system. I was wondering if I could put a small X pipe just in front of the catalytic converters with a relocated o2 sensor in the middle of the X pipe and cap off the original o2 sensor hole with a new pipe so that the O2 will be reading the whole exhaust again instead of just the driver side. My service engine soon light comes on after about 20 minutes of driving and this is a problem that I cant figure out. One of my friends said the sensor may also be reading faster rates than normal since the restriction has been opened up a lot more. It now has 2 8" Cherrybomb glass packs. I am open for any suggestions. Thanks for your help....Tommy  more

Resolved Question: '88 silverado custom exhaust help?

I have an 88 chevy silverado with the 5.7L V8. I wanted it louder and better performance comes along with it. I had them cut the Y-pipe close to the manifolds, then it's just 2 1/2 in. duals all the way back with them exiting the rear straight back, and glasspacks on it. I'm pretty sure it's not just me, but ever since I had this done, it sounds awsome like I wanted it, but the bottom end power is suffering. It runs just fine and everything, but when I give it throttle on bottom to mid range and try to get power out of it, it almost hesitates and it doesn't have any the power it should. If I'm setting at a stop sign in gear with the brakes applied, I'll let off them and just gently get on the gas slowly, and it especially when it's still cold it won't even acknowledge I I hit the throttle. I have to push it in way more for it to even start moving like when hitting the throttle, and I really think it's because of the low end power loss because of too big of exhaust pipe. I know that an engine doesn't need backpressure, but it needs exhaust flow. Mine sure doesn't have any backpressure, but diffently not the flow it should either. I'm thinking that the 2 1/2 in. pipe is way too big for it. I'm thinking this is why it is suffering on bottom end, and it has almost a powerband on top because of this. My dad has a '96 silverado, same engine, and it only has 2 in. pipe all the way back, but yet still has cats on it, but it has plenty of bottom end but not so much top like mine does. I was thinking that the mileage(around 225,000) could have something to do with it, because it is getting tired obviously, but it still runs fine and other than smoking alot when givin full throttle. I was just hoping you could give me some advice as far as what I could do to help get some bottom end back other than changing the piping again. And if you think it's something else please tell me and explain why. Much appreciated! Thank you!!  more

Resolved Question: How can I find out if my 03 silverado has torsion bars, and how do I fix my ride height?

I’m a new truck owner, and sadly I do not know enough about working on trucks to help myself in this situation. I have searched the web tirelessly to find my answer, but I couldn’t seem to find all the information I am looking for. I recently purchased my first truck, a 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500 4WD z71 with a 5.3L V8. I currently have two problems. The first is that I do not like the ride height of the vehicle. I understand all stock trucks are lower in the front, but I wanted to add a leveling kit to bring the front level with the rear. The problem is, I don’t know if I have torsion bars, to purchase the keys to increase the height 1.5-2”. How can I figure this out (does anyone know off hand, or have pictures, that would allow me to look and see)? The second problem is that my ride height in the front is currently uneven. The passenger side currently sits about 1.5” lower than the driver’s side. This stays the same whether someone is in the driver’s seat or not. What could be the problem? If I do have torsion bars, is this an adjustment I could make, or do I have a suspension problem? The truck pulls to the left slightly, but I figured that to be an alignment problem that I would have taken care of after installing the leveling kit. Having paid a lot of money for this vehicle, it is important that I get this right. How can I first of all, correct my ride height (tire pressure is ok…I checked) to be even in the front? Second, what’s the best way to level out my truck? Since I have this thread open, I’d also like to ask for some suggestions concerning an exhaust. What would be a good exhaust option that would have a deep, throaty sound, but not drown me out in the cab on the highway? I only have one cat, so I don’t want to spend the money for true duals. I thought about a cat back system from magnaflow to run dual outlets out the rear. What do you all think?  more

Voting Question: Question about exhaust cutouts?

Ok, I heard that exhaust cutouts can help with the sound of my exhaust system. I have a 1999 Camaro with other modifications. How would I go about this? Resolved Question: quick exhaust ? for my 99 ram?

i have the 5.9.. it has a di/so cat on it and im gonna take it off and put 2 high flow cats on it. followed by true dual glasspacks. the mechanic at the shop said there might be a problem w/ the cpu reading the o2 sensor or something because it now would have 2 converters ( o2 sensors on both sides now) instead of one. is there goina be a problem? or if u put two o2 sensors in the bungs on the cats should it be ok? what im really asking to clarify. wil putting 2 cats on it WORK w/o it givingn me ne o2 sensor trouble? i will have o2 sensors on both cats so it should work. what im askin is will the check engine light come on? because i would keep the first o2 sensor and move the second one onto the bung on one cat. and have a o2 sensor on the otheras well.  more

Resolved Question: Magnaflow or Flowmaster for a 5.3L V8 Chevy Truck?

I just got my exhaust re-done. I have a '99 Silverado 1500 with a 5.3L V8 Before: No stock cats, just a piece of pipe where they should be (I had two), 3" piping from them down to a Dynomax muffler (not sure what type) then through one high-flow cat (yeah I know, stupid mechanic doesn't know what he's doing), then it splits off into duals coming out the side at a 45 degree angle with 3" chrome slash-cut tips. After: Got two high-flow cats put back in the stock position (so the O2 sensors can actually get readings), got the other cat taken off and put a piece of pipe in it's place (so just the Dynomax is there), then it splits off into my duals again with stainless-steel rolled tips. Now, it sounds pretty cool, but I'm extremely picky with my exhaust sound, I've gone through about 6+ exhaust systems, no joke. I just want to know if, instead of having some cheap $40 muffler, switching it out for a Flowmaster or Magnaflow in place, would it have a louder sound? Because I like to have a nice crackle at higher RPMs. Also, I don't want to just take the muffler off and put a piece of pipe in its place. Yes, I've had that before and it sounds nice, but I just want a nicer muffler. I wanna hear some opinions! I've noticed that Magnaflow is much more expensive then Flowmaster after comparing their website prices. Is me cheaping out going to kill my sound?  more
