Get a home equity loan for less than 5% then use that money to invest in bond closed end funds (ACG, TEI) yielding 8-10 pct and pocket the difference? What would be the risks to this strategy? The home is paid off already. Net Advisor thank you for your advice. Does it make a difference if the loan is only 25% of the equity? Also, I figure the capital gains would be partially offset by writing off the interest of the loan. One more thing, I know the bonds dropped like a stone in October but that was right after the Lehman collapse and so there was a lot of uncertainty. Short of another Great Depression, I don't think we are going to see that kind of volatility in the near future. In any case, I was also thinking of MLP's like KMP or safer dividend paying stocks like T or VZ and BP. What would be your suggestions on good high yielding investments moreResolved Question: Is it hard to make money in the stock market? How does it work?

I'm a big risk taker but I'm also very intelligent. I like to take the biggest risk as long as it makes sense (I manage risk well). I'm not running around tossing up money or anything like that. The bigger the risk, the bigger the reward. That's been one of my moto's. I would like to start trading as soon as I can and I am willing to be as patient as I need to be. I just want some direction so I can start learning and I don't know how to determine what strategy to start with. moreVoting Question: Currency/product Investing Strategy Question?
Lets just say the Argentinian peso equals 0.33 cents to every 1 USD. Then a few months later it drops to 0.30 cents to every 1 USD. Now lets say theirs a painting or piece of jewelery selling for $1,000 USD or 3,000 Argentinian pesos. After the peso went down to 0.30 per 1 USD, the painting or jewelry is still the same price, 3,000 Argentinian pesos. So I exchange $1,000 USD for 3,333.33 Argentinian pesos after the peso dropped to .30. I buy the painting or jewelry for 3,000 pesos, which by this time would equal $900 USD. So now I have a painting or jewelry that's worth $1,000 that I paid $900 for and an extra 300 pesos thats worth $100 leftover. Now I go back to the USA, sell my painting or jewelry, between $900-1,000 USD. So now I started with $1,000, and ended up with $1,100 USD. Is this possible? Does this make sense to anyone? What are the flaws with this? Any suggestions? P.S. Is a product like a painting or jewelry really the same price in different countries? When an item goes on display such as a diamond ring, what determines its initial retail price? Is it set by how much its worth everywhere? That doesn't make sense because in practice, wouldn't international currency fluctuations make this diamond ring become cheaper or more expensive then it was previously? moreResolved Question: How do I maximize my investing profit?
I have a very low risk trading strategy but have only small returns. How can I maximize these returns? I could use a margin account because this strategy is low risk. I am trading a combination of QQQQ and PSQ. Any other ideas how to maximize this profit? moreResolved Question: Where can I find an advisor for a career in options trading?
I think I would like to have my next career be as a self employed options trader. After a 14 year career in the Engineering and IT world I moved last year into a career in finance, specifically as a commercial lending officer for a large credit union ($1.5B.) My education career started in Engineering (including 19 hours of Calculus and linear algebra) but my actual undergrad is a BBA. My IT education includes 4 advanced self taught certifications. I started investing in CD's, stocks and bonds in 1990, added covered call options in 2000 and long call options in 2005. Even though I had never worked in the finance field, my amateur interest in the financial markets is great enough that senior management asks me my opinion on current issues and trends because of my constant exposure. As part of my job requirement I will be starting an MBA in September and my course of study is up to me as long as I am working on the graduate degree. Due to my pre-existing interest, heavy coursework in finance, securities and financial math would not be unusual. For political reasons I have to stay in this job for 4 years but I effectively have the opportunity, means and permission to rebuild myself with an eye toward starting on a career in the world of options should I so desire. I know that during my studies I could ask the professors and advisors about this but I would much rather find someone who is actually doing this to help me structure my courses and studies (formal and self taught) so that while I am being paid to learn I can be learning the things to help me most. As some here have seen (and answered my questions) I have at least some understanding of options trading. I have found what I think it an effective day trading strategy but it has the significant problems of being unable to scale and requiring constant attention to prevent being on the wrong side of a trend. I need to really learn to do spreads and other long term positions so I can make thousands on a longer term position instead of the $100 per round trip in 15 minutes I target today and not have to watch every minute move from 9:30 to 4:00 all day worrying about missing an instantaneous buying or selling opportunity. I would very much appreciate it if somebody who has had success in the area of options investing can help me to learn what I need to learn to have the mental tools and experience to be able to seek a career in this arena or barring direct help, help me to find someone who can guide me on this. I don't think I am asking for a lot of someone's time but I certainly think it can't hurt to ask for some help rather than waste money on books or seminars flailing about trying to find that one needle in the haystack of information otherwise uselss to me. Feel free to contact me directly should you be so inclined. Thanks in advance for any help provided. moreResolved Question: Are there fees associated with rolling over a 401k to an IRA?
I have several 401K plans from previous employers. Through some research, I liked the ideals and investing strategy advocated by Edward Jones. After speaking to and Edward Jones rep, I found that there would be sales fees (the typical class A, B, and C share stuff) associated with buying into the fund family he was suggesting. I stoped because I didn't want to pay fees and didn't really feel the fund damily performed so much better that it justified the fees. Recently I spoke to Fidelity investments and they insisted that they have a large family of funds (both fidelity and non fideltiy funds) that have no fees associated with rolling over a 401k. Is Fideltiy just burying the fees in the funds expenses (hence you pay a higher expense ratio). Are there truly no fees? I know Edward Jones doesn't actively manage funds, but is there performance so much better they can justify 2-3% buy in fees? I would think this information would be clear and somebody would have looked into this extensively, although all my internet research shows some places charge and some do not. Has anyone come across this? What has your experience been? moreResolved Question: What retirements funds are best to invest in at this time?

For option strategy back test and analysis I thought about building my own software tool. After spending hours I completed the process flow diagram. Now I need three things 1. Historical option data 2. Database ( if the purchased option data is not in MS Access or XL ) 3. Programmer to write front end code. Eg. strategy back test- For a Long straddle look up historical prices for various equity, with different strike prices, exp month etc before the earning release date and compute the optimal return ( if +ve) for various scenarios . Is this kind of analysis available somewhere / or with a brokerage ? or am I waisting my investment on this software tool? In terms of purchasing it of course Please don't waste my time with your personal comments regarding "Who cares, blah blah blah. moreResolved Question: Is this the best way to do a start up business?
I've been trying to start up a business for the past two years now. Initially, I wasn't very focused but did manage to meet all the necessary requirements (business registration, sales tax ID, EIN etc.) The recent downturn in the economy forced me to start thinking more seriously about my business. I am thinking about selling human hair online but don't have the money to purchase the hair upfront. (Also, I don't want to invest too much money in purchasing the hair and then run into a problem moving the product.) My strategy is to put up my site, advertise and wait for orders before buying the hair in larger quantities. In the meantime, I've spent about two months performing thorough research and used what little money I had to purchase samples of the hair from various suppliers to test the quality. I've found a supplier so now the next step is to get customers. Is this a risky way of starting business? Or am I on the right track with my strategy? moreResolved Question: OK,best long term strategy investing 1K/month?

I am hoping to have made a few x £10,000 at least within a few years time until the crisis is over. If say I managed to amass £100,000 within these few years and the IPO market was back in big business with hot trends after the crisis, at least enough to turn your investment up 500% return, and investing into 1 IPO every year for 10 years - your 20% tax on profits of course, and reinvesting your capital again, could you become mega rich within 10 years time because of your compounded IPO investment strategy, and would this, or could this work? The real tax rate to the investor is about 45% after factoring in the 35% corporate tax rate with the 15% dividend tax. Taking all this into account, it’s not at all unusual for a wealthy individual to pay upwards of 50% of their income in taxes every year. What’s more, their corporate holdings must pay taxes regardless of whether or not any of the income is distributed to shareholders. To say the rich pay a lower percentage of their income in taxes than the poor is naive at best and downright dishonest at worst. The recession is bringing an end to the bad spending habits of our politicians. They need to learn to cut back on spending like the rest of us. There is no more money to tax, borrow or print - that will not further weaken the economy. To all the people who continue to talk about this trickle down theory: We have been trying to do this for about 8 years now and all it has done is bankrupt our country. The rich don't spend money, they save and invest it in stock. They don't create jobs, unless you count crappy low paying jobs without benefits. also, to the people who are claiming that most poor people are poor because they don't work hard enough, it's called a cyclical poverty. some people can't pull themselves up by their bootstraps, because they weren't lucky enough to be born with said bootstraps. we need to empower people and restructure the system to allow people to get out of poverty, not continue to punish them for being born into poor families. Obama will eventually raise taxes on everyone! Trying something new is not a sound economic strategy. Obama's economic strategy is based on spending. His current tax plan will not be able to support his plans to spend the economy out of the recession. Therefore, he will likely need to increase the taxes on everyone, while congress continue to spend money on more social programs that the country simply cannot afford. Obama's plans will not work because the country is broke. There is no more money to tax, print or borrow for Obama to spend. Tax and spend is not a good economic recovery strategy. What Obama doesn't mention about his tax plan is that his proposed tax on the "super rich" includes raising the capital gains tax, which is what the federal government takes from any profits we make from the sale of stocks. ANYONE -regardless of income level- who has a 401(k), an IRA, or any other retirement vehicle is likely invested in stocks or mutual funds that invest in stocks. Obama's proposal would raise the tax on your retirement money from 15% to 33%. This applies to low income, middle income, or high income families. Again, this applies to us all. Obama wants to implement many new government programs, and getting more tax revenue is the logical way to do it. Obama will increase the lowest tax bracket by 50%. Barack Obama is NOT in support of making the 2001 Bush tax cuts permanent. The Bush tax cuts lowered the lowest tax bracket from 15% to 10%, a 33% decrease. If Obama does not make that permanent, he will be effectively agreeing to increase the middle class tax bracket by 50% Obama will increase capital gains taxes from 15% to 28%, almost a 100% increase. The best candidate is one who supports taking away power from the FED and dismantling the FED altogether. For our founding fathers did not want a central bank to begin with. It was one of the reasons the colonies wanted independence from British rule who supported the idea. Too bad Ron Paul is out of the race. moreResolved Question: 14. 14. Lear, Inc., has $800,000 in current assets, $350,000 of which are considered permanent current assets. In addition, the firm has $600,000 invested in fixed assets. a. The avg annual return during the last 3 years for the index fund has been 17% & for the internet stock fund it has been 28%. Obama is spending so much money and proposing so many programs that EVEN Democrats in Congress are taking a gasping. There's nothing new about it - it's old, real old. The so-called "NWO" is nothing more than an elite cabal of fascist, neo-feudalist British financial interests, working in concert with Wall Street and neoconservative allies. The "NWO" conspiracy types (at least Alex Jones for sure) is a manufactured distraction designed to redirect attention, and to create division within the United States - the destruction of nations is a key component of their agenda. Near as I can tell, the leader is the fascist Nazi sympathizer, Prince Philip, aka "The Virus." This sub-human slime-mold has publicly stated his desire to cull the human population many times, even expressing his wish to be reincarnated as a lethal virus, so as to "do something" about the problem of "overpopulation." http://www.thestar.com/News/World/article/304614 http://thinkexist.com/quotes/prince_phillip/ The British Empire's strategy is feudal to its core: - Eliminate nations and national identities. Divide the population amongst itself. - Create massive speculative financial bubbles through deregulation, global capital flows, and easy credit. - Fuel the bubble, divide the US internally, and begin to reduce the Arab population through phony wars, like the US invasion of Iraq, and the attempts to incite conflict between the US and Iran & Russia (which my contacts tell me were put down by patriotic members of the armed forces, led by JCS chair Adm. Mike Mullen and Sec. Gates, who in the closing months of the Bush administration, directly ordered Bush and Cheney to cease all attempts to start such wars, or be placed under immediate military arrest). - Withdraw central bank credit and burst the bubble. Then, when the phony economy is revealed, use political allies to sabotage any attempt to rebuild the physical economy, and implement a radical, fascist fiscal austerity program, taken right out of the playbook of Nazi finance minister Schacht. - Continue to incite internal division and revolution through friendly media outlets. Incite hatred for and usurp the constitutional national leadership. - Inhibit any sort of investment in public-sector fixed capital, especially infrastructure which increases agricultural yields. - Privatize infrastructure and resources to restrict supply. Associate all attempts to invest in water, power, and transport infrastructure with an unpopular political ideology (in the US, this is the "socialism/communism" nonsense directed towards President Obama). - Monopolize all vital choke-points for resources. Restrict supply of all vital commodities (i.e., the British-sponsored biofuel scam). - Send commodity prices through the roof in a massive speculative bubble. Stand by as people in the developing world starve. - Through friend media outlets, publish lots of stories about how there are "too many people to feed," but never publish anything about declining agricultural yields due to rotting public-sector water and transport infrastructure. Distort and obfuscate, as well as spread "false positives" through agent provocateurs (i.e., Alex Jones). - Induce remaining nations to destroy each other by pitting them against one another in armed conflict. - Massively reduce the world's population, especially that of the "undesirable" ethnic groups. - Sweep in for the kill. Have the elite pick the bones of the remaining productive economy, and monopolize the supply of existing capital goods to restrict industrial development. - Ensure that the masses are dumbed-down, unaware of what's really going on, and easily manipulated by various sorts of religion or jingoism. As all of this is happening, distort it, and either neutralize or marginalize anyone who makes it known. Chains, Exactly - though it's not the government as such. The intention is to distract you from the real enemy; which, as I've told you, can definitively be shown to NOT be President Obama (who is actually the last hope for preserving the constitution and the USA). moreResolved Question: Feed Questions: Did I swap my horse over too fast? Or too much sugar?
About 3 months ago, I moved to a different barn. She was switched pretty quickly from 100% alfalfa forage to bermuda and fescue hay. We did a gradual change over a few weeks from about 1 scoop plain oats twice daily, to 1/2 scoop strategy and 1/2 scoop sweetfeed (low percentage of molasses). We also put her on about 3/4 scoop of sugar beet pulp (my boarder said it's good for their coat and feet, and everyone else at the farm was on it, sooo yeah). At first she just got the expected hay belly from the big switch off alfalfa cubes. But that's gone now, and now she's gaining weight in weird places. She's quite a petit thoroughbred, but lately, her neck and butt are /huge/, but they don't actually look like fat deposits...it still seems tight like muscle, and her neck isn't necessarily "cresty", as it's gotten larger all around. To give you all an idea, I'll poke fun at her and say shed looks like a quarter horse. Except her belly isn't gaining weight now like I'd like it to, while her hindquarters and neck maintain their odd weight. Do you all think this could be due to the rapid feed change? I've taken her off the sugar beet, and have added 1/4 scoop of those plain oats to her Strategy and sweet feed. I've been weary about the Strategy, since she's never been on anything like it, and I don't really know all that much about feed... Do you think she will adjust to the sugar levels eventually? Or should I invest in some more plain oats? Or do you think something else could be causing the problem?? Her exercise has been varying lately, but we've also had our up and down times in the past; on her old feed, she'd always gain the weight in her belly, and lose it in her neck and hindquarters. Everything else is much the same for her though. And no worries about her energy level. She's always been extremely excitable... if anything, I'd almost rather her be more hyper when I work her; lately, she's seems to need more and more time to get excited, wake up, and move out during our flat warmup. (It's been going on for awhile though, I've attributed it to maturity and age though and not her feed haha). moreResolved Question: Should I continue contributing to my company's retirement savings plan?
Considering I was down 25% last year and 15% this year so far, I think my best option would be to stop contributing and use that money not invested to pay down bills. If and when the market recovers between 8000 and 8500 that is when I will contribute again. Is this a good strategy or am I missing a key benefit to continue to invest? My company already contributes 15% of my salary even if I don't contribute a dime. I am well aware of dollar cost averaging. Guess I should have been dollar cost averaging everytime Sirius stock went down from it's high of $8 to its current price of 15 cents. Ah no!!! I already called my company this morning to stop all contributions until the market recovers. moreVoting Question: What is the right time for engagement in the relationship?
Me and My bf have been dating for a little more than a year now. He is from another country and works in my city. He has a very good job and rents an appt with a colleague. I am living with my family. The way that I was brought up doesnt approve living together before at least an engagement. I already had to fight for going on holidays with my bf (it is a shame for my family i am the first not vigin-before-marriage). My family invested in another appartment that is going to be ready for living in a years time (that would be 2 years of dating him). He is very excited about the new appt and always talks about living there with me. I know my family will allow us to live there only after engagement. He says he wants to see if we can live together before commitment. He is from a catholic family and wants a 1 life long marriage, though he never goes to church. He is dreaming of getting married and having children with me but not just now (hell knows when exactly) etc. Also he asked me if i'd go to another country with him if he gets another job. I told him i d go if he proposes (i am not going to leave home just for a boyfriend). His parents are very nice and like me lots. I think his mom asks him when he is going to get married all the time (he loves her but she cant pressure him he is too independent). I am 24 this year and he is 26. I would want to start a family in the next couple of years. I am very annoyed that all my family and people I know ask me every week when i am going to get married. For me the perfect scenario would be - he proposes this year, we start living together, then we might move to another country etc. I dont mind to be engaged for long, it is just a fact that matters (for my family as well). But I dont know what to do if he doesnt propose this year( can easily happen). I d have to refuse to live with him and rent the new appt. What would you recommend me as a strategy for the coming year? I dont want to pressure him as he gets not very happy when I start this topic. He is well aware about my wishes and my family. I also know 1 year is not that much, but 2 years seems right for engagement and starting living together. Anybody had anything similar? Both we have never been engaged before. His mates here are all single and are really bad examples for him :) His friends back home settle down but there is almost no communication between. Very soon his parents are flying here to see the country and meet my family. moreResolved Question: Does Obama advocate wealth redistribution via the Federal Govt.?
Because this quote certainly seems to imply that.... In the 2001 interview, Obama said: "If you look at the victories and failures of the civil rights movement and its litigation strategy in the court, I think where it succeeded was to invest formal rights in previously dispossessed people, so that now I would have the right to vote. I would now be able to sit at the lunch counter and order and as long as I could pay for it I’d be OK But, the Supreme Court never ventured into the issues of redistribution of wealth, and of more basic issues such as political and economic justice in society. To that extent, as radical as I think people try to characterize the Warren Court, it wasn't that radical. It didn't break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the Founding Fathers in the Constitution, at least as it's been interpreted, and the Warren Court interpreted in the same way, that generally the Constitution is a charter of negative liberties. Says what the states can't do to you. Says what the federal government can't do to you, but doesn't say what the federal government or state government must do on your behalf. And that hasn't shifted and one of the, I think, tragedies of the civil rights movement was because the civil rights movement became so court-focused I think there was a tendency to lose track of the political and community organizing and activities on the ground that are able to put together the actual coalition of powers through which you bring about redistributive change. In some ways we still suffer from that." http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=79225 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iivL4c_3pck&eurl=http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=79225&feature=player_embedded I understand not everyone is a fan of World Net Daily. I have a lot of research to do. moreVoting Question: Is purchasing a small amount of whole life insurance ever a good idea?
I am a single woman in my mid-30s and unfortunately have not been able to save much for retirement. My 401k from a previous job has been all but decimated in the last year, and I am not eligible yet to join my new company's plan. I sought to open a Roth IRA, but the financial adviser my credit union recommended me to is actually an insurance salesman. He wants to sell me a whole life insurance policy with a $169k death benefit that would cost me $100 per month. I keep reading that whole life insurance is typically a bad investment unless you plan to keep the policy for more than 20 years. If I sign up for the policy, I would do so with the intention of keeping it as a long-term investment. The term insurance I have through work would only pay my beneficiary $35k, and I would prefer that my mortgage and other potential bills not be left for someone else to take care of if I got hit by a car and killed tomorrow. The projected rate of return over 30+ years looks good, but I do realize the guaranteed rate is the only, well, guarantee. And I understand my premium will stay the same unless I opt to buy more insurance. But everything I am reading from financial experts (Suze Orman, for instance) says it is better to buy term insurance and invest the difference. Is this a blanket guideline? Can a small whole life insurance policy ever be a good idea in combination with other investment strategies? I am so confused. moreResolved Question: What's a good investment strategy for the future?

I am thinking about investing some money in oil. Here is what I am thinking. Some assumptions: 1. Oil price will go above $45 barrel in future(Today's price) 2. ETF fund USO won't go bankrupt 3. Oil price won't go below $25 Investment in USO ETF. Assuming oil price will go down in future. Invest $1000 every time when oil drops $5 (Can be every $3) For example, Invest $1000 at $45 Invest $1000 at $40 (If it goes to $40) ..... .... I saw this book in the bookstore, and I didn't have the time to buy it, but now I can't remember the name. Hopefully someone can help me out. It had dozens and dozens of strategies from all the most well-known investors. It talked about who they are, their strategy, and I think it might have had quotes from their published books. I think it might have been a self-published book, but I can't remember. I'm pretty sure it was a guy's name as the author. Given the current economic situation, with high levels of unemployment and rising inflation, am I better off paying the debt off? Investing the money? moreResolved Question: Why don't people just rack up debt if they're not going to pass it on to their kids?
What are your thoughts on people who purposefully rack up debt? Rather than painstakingly saving every penny to invest, they are living beyond their means and plan to do so until they die? I.e. they are fully conscious of the fact that their incomes do not support their lifestyle, but they are strategically planning to maximize their ability to consume in this life and are planning to die in debt. Ripping equity out of their homes, maxing out credit cards, not paying student loans, etc. I really would like everyone to please address this issue if they can. Going without today and investing to provide for one’s old age is utterly responsible and ideal– but it is disheartening when a lot of people in this country seems to be purposefully living it up as consumers and plan to die in debt? What, in your thoughts, is the incentive to continue saving if this is the case??? By the way, as an addition to the above question: If you are a single peron or married couple not planning on having children to pass an inheritance onto, what stops these people from attempting the above mentioned strategy: maxing out lines of credit and dying in debt? This would effectively wipe out the need to save for retirement, nay, the need to save at all. Once you hit a certain older age you would just start living it up using credit cards until you die, right? Probably a naive question to some, but I am honestly flabbergasted - is the only thing holding people back from doing this a sense of social morality, or am I missing something here??? Thanks in advance guys. Hey guys, thanks for the input so far, I really appreciate hearing all of your insights. However, I wasn't asking for a rhetorical or anecdotal answer. I literally want to know: is there anything preventing people from maxing out their credit until they die? If not, why don't more people do this? I myself am extremely poor, but I do save every penny. What incentive is there to save for retirement if it is possible to max out your credit? I need a financial answer. Thanks again guys. By the way, @ Unknown 3rd commenter, I FEEL YOUR PAIN. Seriously. I grew up in foster care and I was homeless at age 18, I worked three jobs just to get myself food and shelter. Now I earn minimum wage working multiple jobs and I live like a hobo. So I am in no way blaming the people who can't live within their means. I'm specifically talking about the people who rack up millions in debt just to live in big houses and buy pretty things, because they have no intention of paying it off. Thanks again. moreVoting Question: personal finance please help me!?

i have tried diets, i always lose five pounds and gain them right back. i just did the master cleanse, lost 5 pounds in 5 days, and then didnt lose any more weight for the next 7 days. i drank beer the weekend i stopped the cleanse and gained 3 back in those two days. i gained the next two back over the next week. now i feel shortness of breath sometimes, my back hurts, and i am constantly hungry, which i didnt feel when i was this weight prior to the diet. i have flat feet and if i run or jump i get shinsplints, even if i jog for only a few minutes, wearing brand new asics running shoes. i used to go to the gym, because i didnt get shin splints on the elliptical or bike but where i live now the gym is over $130 per month, its very far away and i simply dont have that kind of money. i also have abdominal hernias and my doctor tells me not to put any stress on my abs, which makes exercises like pilates difficult. i also dont have any equipment (weights, mats, balls, etc) and i dont want to invest unless i know i will stick with a program. my last exercise strategy was taking the stairs - at home (and i live on the 19th floor), at work, at the mall, everywhere - and after multiple weeks of that, not changing my diet, i didnt lose any weight and i had to stop when i went on the cleanse because i didnt have the energy anymore. now i get shortness of breath after only a few floors. i am 5'5 140 and i just want to get to 130. i felt very healthy and satisfied when i was 135, but i know that if i go back on the cleanse ill just bounce back up when i stop. i eat a vegan diet due to principles, i dont have a car and i walk everywhere. i eat a lot of green vegetables, but also a lot of tofu, rice, noodles, and bananas. i love fruit but when i eat fruit i dont feel full, i can eat a half of a watermelon and still feel hungry, but if i eat more fruit i feel sick. the only thing that makes me feel full is carbs - rice, noodles, or bread. when i feel hungry, all i can think about is food. PLEASE if you know any way to help me eat less, or an easy exercise regime i can stick with, I would really really appreciate it!! i feel like its a reasonable goal but its just so hard for me. thank you! ok i appreciate the actual people who took actual time to give me advice, (as opposed to those who are blatantly advertising crap sites that are fad diets and not at all what i need) but i dont think you read carefully. please do NOT tell me to run, i repeat, i get shin splints after less than 10 minutes of jogging that last for almost two weeks before they heal. please do NOT tell me to do ab work, i repeat, i have abdominal hernias and if i put stress on my abs i risk enlarging the hernias which would require surgery, and i risk gangrene which would require emergency surgery and death within hours if said surgery doesnt happen. moreResolved Question: Would investing in Exxon be a good strategy right now?

am in a a bit of a tough position and I need a good resource. My dad passed away a few years ago, and left my mom with a decent amount of money. Not a ton, and probably not enough to have retired on, but she has a good start. She has never worked outside the home, and is old enough that starting a real job is out of the question. My dad was one of those guys who if he stayed on top of it, could have (and probably still could) make a killing in the market... if he wasn't lazy about it. He knew what to buy, and when to buy it, but he let things sit for too long without reacting as he should have. For example, even the firms he invested with were impressed with his investment choices, but he never refinanced his mortgage, which sat at 11%. Much of his savings was in individual stocks. Needless to say, they aren't anymore. Now my mom is trying to figure out what she wants to do with the money she has. I know enough to get by and prepare for the future with where I am in life. The strategies that I would use don't make any sense for my mom, as my tolerance for risk is still higher than hers. So what I am looking for is, do any of you have any good references on anything that will either help my mom manage her money, or help me to manage it for her? Right now, she is just looking for something that defines what her options are (CDs, Mutual funds, money market accounts, etc). Beyond that any good resources for retirement strategies?
