Open Question: Will a dremel bit on a drill cut wood?
So I'm doing a little woodworking project over summer with some friends, we have all of the lumber and tools necessary, but we're still missing the most important tool we need, a dremel. We tried looking online but no where near-by has a dremel for rent and we don't want to spend $100 buying one. Here on Yahoo awnsers, I saw there was a question about a dremel bit being used on a drill so here's my question: If you put a dremel bit into a drill, will it be able to cut throught wood? This girl whom I am friends with, birthday just passed. I didn't know what to get her so I didn't get her anything. She mentioned she liked drinking wine (she is 20) so i thought hey i'll build her a wine rack. I'm pretty good at woodworking. I built it out of solid mahogony and stained it. It looks beautiful but my sisters and mom said it would make her feel awkward if I gave it to her because we had a past of liking eachother and she might think it's a really sincere gift. I remember when I was up there years ago most of the boats were pretty utilitarian and metal. Down here in the lower 48 there are quite a few 'snob' boats that wanted trick woodwork, somehow I found a niche in this market. Is there much of a demand for trick boat woodwork up there? Juneau more so than Anchorage? Ketchikan? I've had it with the lower 48 and I'm wondering where my chances might be best. Hi!! My next project is to update the kitchen cabinets. I plan to remove the trim strips, strip the carcases and restain and varnish the face frames. I will construct my own new doors and drawer fronts (perhaps the whole drawer). New hardware, different style doors (more of a craftsman style) and new color should look pretty good. It is the sides of the cabinets that concern me. I don't think they are even oak. I think the cabinet maker used fir plywood and an oak stain. In any case, they are pretty scroungy looking. They are also not perfectly flat. I am somewhat distrustful of the thin veneers on the market. I can resaw my own veneer and have an 18" Rikon bandsaw for just that purpose. If I were to resaw a bunch of quartersawn oak into 8" wide and 3/32" thick strips, how would I stick them to the sides of the cabinets with any expectation of them staying put. Also, with wide strips of wood over plywood, what do I do about wood movement. Will my thick veneer buckle? Finally, how do I smooth out the surface of the cabinet to create a flat gluing surface? So, 4 questions: 1. Should I be so intimidated by the stick on veneers on the market? 2. How would I attach 3/32" veneer to the sides of cabinets without uninstalling them. 3. Hey I have a problem I can use some input on. I am the sole caregiver for my mom who is disabled, basically I do everything for her from cooking to giving her a bath. We get along alright except for one thing Money!. We are not financially hard up by any ones definition I make about a thousand dollars a month doing custom woodworking and she has a good income from investments. She does all her SHOPPING via catalog and home shopping channels and gets whatever she wants. But if I spend any money at all even as much as buying a DVD or something she gives me a hard time about it saying I don't know how to manage money etc and she thinks that she buys the stuff I use for my woodworking even though I buy it out of a separate account and have shown her countless times where I have paid for it my self. I've tried to let her know it's not realistic or normal to expect me to go without the things I Want since I can't go to the movies or anything due to staying around for her. I have even given up on even thinking about dating because of the way she acts about money. So all I get to do is sit at home and take care of her. She says I shouldn't have to buy movies because we have cable tv and the same goes for computer or video games I should just watch and play the same ones over and over again forever. Clothes are another one of the things that gets her going I buy new clothes maybe once or twice a year and she thinks I can wear the same things forever even if I loose or gain weight. I am moving into a house and the landlord has given me free reign to decorate as I please. The dining room floor is wood that has been painted grey. The land lord mentioned plans to paint it brown. I am curious if I would be able to use a palm sander and sand it with rough paper then sand it again with fine sand paper, vacuum the dust up with a shop vac then stain and varnish it. I have done wood work in the past and am proficient with basic woodworking but am not familar with wood flooring. I am a stay at home mom so time isn't to big of an issue, I just don't want to damage the floor. Our budget is pretty small so I figured a lot of time and elbow grease would hopefully do the trick. The room is about 120 square foot. It is an old farmhouse probably over 100 years. Does not seem to work for me. I use it commercially as a carpenter, go back the next day and you can't even budge things that have been gooped. I've recently bought a small tube or two for woodworking projects and repairs and the stuff will not hold. I've tried surface prep and everything, 24 hours later and it pulls apart like i tried to use saltwater taffy instead of glue. Trying to do a finish coat on a small woodworking piece. I am gettin a lot of crackling in the finish. Can't seem to eliminate it. Object is made from Poplar Base coat is Krylon's white primer, sanded and recoated 3 + times until completely smooth no grain whatsoever Paint is two + layers of Krylon enamel sanded until absololutely smooth Using a spray can gloss lacquer by Watco for finish. I put a second coat of paint on first thing today. Allowed it to dry a few hours, then sanded it smooth with 320. I removed the dust and debris with a barely wet rag, allowed the moisture on the surface to dry, then hit it with lacquer. No problems so far. I let the first coat of lacquer dry for a few more hours then scuff sanded it with 400 grit. I used the barely-moist rag again to remove all dust and debris from sanding, then allowed it to dry for a few moments. I set it on the spray rack and hit it with the final coat of lacquer, and again with the crackling. It only does it in spots. I suspect I am not allowing the water to dry long enough. I've tried several different approaches to eliminate this crackling effect and no luck. Anyone out there do woodworking and run into this? Please advise. Is it ok to use a not-so heavy duty drill to mix drywall mud. I tried using a cordless drill and it used up all battery power in less than a minute. The only corded drill I have is a light duty drill that I use mostly for woodworking. Would using this drill ruin it? Also, any tips on the mud to use for knockdown texture on the ceiling. Should I use the same stuff I used to tape the seams, buckets of all purpose (green top) already mixed mud? And how much water should I add to a bucket of this. I love this knife and it is one of the best tools I have for woodworking and camping. Unfortunately, the pommel has loosened over time and with use, and I do not know how to tighten it. I just had a 100 amp sub-panel run to my workshop. The electrician gave me a gfi courtesy outlet and that is it. I would like to run all of the wiring from this point myself. The walls are open and the studs are exposed. The work shop is 16 feet wide by 30 feet deep. It is an old single car garage that lost its power source 10 years ago. How many florescent light fixtures, should I put in it? Any idea how many outlets I should use and how many circuits I should use for power and lighting (I assume at least three)? The workshop will be used for lite wood working and storage, my main interest is gardening/landscaping, so most of the woodworking would be for stuff around the garden. Let's say i have a degree in machining, and enough experience with heat treating and computer drafting, to stand a chance at building a simple rifle from scratch. I can get a finished barrel for it, that has been rifled, heat treated and stress relieved, and is chambered for the round, so all that's left is the rim sticking out the end of the barrel. All i have to do is essentially cap that end of the barrel, add a firing mechanism, and a stock. A few lathe parts, some milling, and i can have an overly-strong bolt action put together. For safety sake i'm considering going with the sliding-block action used on most artillery and tank cannons. Cumbersome, but simple and hellishly durable. Some woodworking later, my rifle would be finished and ready to start testing with a string on the trigger, for a good number of rounds, measuring to make sure parts of the action aren't deforming, and hopefully ending up with a rifle i can hunt with. BUT the big question is, is it legal to build your own rifle? Do i have to apply for a permit or license before? Or after? Can i take an existing rifle, and modify it to the point where it's really just the old serial number, on a good chunk of the old frame, welded onto my hand-built receiver, even though the caliber changes? Or so long as it's for personal use only, never for sale, can i just engrave "Experimental" and my name, social security number, and home address on it (one thing i'd read) What is the right process? My internet research attempts yield alot of clutter and unrelated things. I realize that there is not a good chance i would ever get caught with a rifle not bearing a serial number, but for the chance i get checked over by the rangers when i'm out hunting with it, it's not worth a felony. Yep, i've got a fully finished barrel from a manufacturer, and i'm still researching the headspacing on it. Even if i somehow got overly ambitious and made this a semi-auto, there is no way on earth i would allow it to be a full-auto, or suppressed, or short barrel (it's a 15lb 35" barrel!) so it won't be illegal by its own merits. moreResolved Question: can you recommend a drill?

Cordless would be good, but i'm not opposed corded, since i've heard a lot of bad stuff about batteries dying, especially with infrequent use. I want to learn what I can about a lot of things off the internet. One of them would be how to build an engine that I could use in a go-cart (but preferably diesel so that I could power it off biodiesel fuel), and how to build the whole go-cart etc. A go-cart would just be one thing... I want to learn as much as I can about mechanics, woodworking, welding, etc. etc. just because I like to know these things and some of them would be fun to do sometime. I'm going into a career of welding, so I got that one covered, but theres a ton of other things that I/ want to learn and I'd prefer not to have to pay for schooling on the, and right now i have a part time job that barely pays for my gas (it's 20 miles to my school, 20 more miles to my vocational school, 30 miles from there to my work, and 40 miles from my work back to my house... they're basicly all in different directions, but do the math and i go about 110 miles in a day so there goes the money i get for work.
